Michael Massaia: photos of Central Park

Michael Massaia has created a gorgeous series of images of Central Park between the hours of 2am and 6am. They were shot with a large format camera using black and white film and developed in Pyro staining developers.

They are some of the loveliest fine-art photos I’ve seem for some time.

Digital photography has come such a long way that it’s often hard to see a justification for continuing to use film and huge, cumbersome larger format cameras, especially when most photographs are viewed online, but Massaia’s photographs have an astonishing quality to them. There’s a hyper-real fidelity to these images which makes them quite haunting. This is all worlds away from that mobile phone camera you’ve got in your pocket.
